How Worked Hours Are Calculated
This calculator finds the total time between your start and end time, then subtracts your break, giving you both a decimal hour figure (useful for payroll) and a plain hours and minutes figure (useful for reading at a glance).
If an hourly rate is entered, that decimal hour figure is multiplied directly by the rate to estimate gross pay for the shift, before taxes or deductions.
How to Use This Hours Calculator
Enter your start and end time for the shift.
Add any unpaid break time in minutes.
Optionally enter your hourly rate to see an estimated gross pay for the shift.
Frequently Asked Questions
What if my shift crosses midnight?
If the end time is earlier than the start time, the calculator assumes the shift continues into the next day and calculates accordingly.
Why are there two hour formats shown?
Decimal hours (like 7.5) are what most payroll systems use for calculations, while hours and minutes (like 7h 30m) are easier to read and confirm at a glance.
Does the pay estimate include taxes?
No, the estimate shown is gross pay before taxes, deductions, or overtime rules, which vary by employer and location.
